A rare Regency straw filled souvenir pin cushion titled 'A Trifle from Ramsgate' and dated 1805, the reverse with the initials I.W., woven in green and cream thread with fleur de lys, the title flanked to either side by a naieve horse in profile.

Ramsgate was a fashionable seaside town in the late 18th and early 19th century. It was also an important naval garrison town which played in pivotal role during the Napoleonic wars. The threat of invasion saw the construction of coastal defences, a naval harbour and garrisons on both cliffs making Ramsate a place of military and social consequence in Regency society.

Perhaps the inclusion of the French motif of the fleur de lys on the pin cushion is a reference to Ramsgate's importance during the Napoleonic wars.
