A Georgian memorial portrait miniature, painted with a young gentleman wearing a red coat, initialled J.R. and dated 1785, the reverse with a hair-work memorial in the form of a seed-pearl tied sheaf of wheat. Initialled J.R. and titled PIGNUS AMORIS. Within an oval convex glazed gold mount with engine turned decoration and suspension loop.
The sheaf of wheat denotes mourning, the falling pieces of wheat and the pearls symbolizes the passing of a loved one. The motto 'Pignus Amoris' being a pledge of love.
