A superb Japanese wooden scale model of a traditional house enclosure, probably circa 1910-20. The two storey main structure and subsidiary buildings all elaborately detailed with sliding pierced shutters and decorative screens, within a traditional balustraded gravel garden with cork faux rocks and a peach tree. Contained in an Edwardian roll-fronted glazed and ebonised display case.
In exceptionally good condition - it appears to have always been well protected in it's case, which opens at the rear.
NB: For a similar, but smaller, model see the V&A's Museum of Childhood example gifted by Queen Mary who was given it by the Prince of Wales during a tour of the Far East in 1922.
Case: 78cm long x 41cm high x 38cm deep.
