Antique Orkney Chair in Original Paint

Code: 10794

SOLD
An Antique Pine Ornkey Chair dating from the early 20th Century, being of an unusual size, somewhere between the standard child size chair and the larger adult chair.  In excellent, original condition retaining traces of it's original green paint.

The back is made from oat straw and bent grass, bound together with cord made from twisted bent grass.

The Orkney chair developed through local island tradition,  originating from a vernacular piece of furniture that the islanders could make for themselves with local materials that were readily available. The design of the rounded straw back is thought to be a practical in sheltering the occupant from the cold Orkney draughts.

The chair is unmarked but it very likely to haave been retailed at Liberty of London where this pine framed chair was available in a green, blue or brown painted finish.
