A pair of bent-wood lounge chairs in the classical design of Jindrich Halabala for Up Závody Brno, produced in Czechoslovakia in the 1950's. The upholstered backs with corded and buttoned detailing over sprung and upholstered seats, with exaggerated bent-wood beech arms and raised on four supports, upholstered in 1950's textured floral woven fabric which appears to be original to the chairs.
I hesitate to definitely attribute these chairs to Jindrich Halabala, however they are almost identical in design to his Model 2 chair.

Jindrich Halabala was a professor of design and architecture in Prague and very influential in European furniture design in the 1930's and 1940's. He was a significant proponent of modernist, industrially manufactured furniture in Czechoslovakia, striving to produce good looking furniture of high quality for a broader market. As chief designer of the large Brno-based furniture producer United Arts and Crafts Manufacture (UP), he significantly influenced its manufacturing from the 1930's onwards and pioneered a technique to bend large sections of wood using steam and rollers.
Condition: The chairs are extremely comfortable, in original condition and have not been restored. The springs are good and upholstery in good order with no stains. As is often the case with this type of chair there is some minor cracking to the bentwood arms in a few places.

The backs are 80cm high, the seats 66.5cm wide at the front (including arms), 53cm deep and 40cm high.
