A good provincial French oak and fruitwood armoire of ecclesiastical origin, with stepped cornice and a pair of shaped panel doors with shell carved detailing, inlaid starbursts, brass studded decoration and visible long steel bar hinges . The elaborate brass escutcheons with punch-work decoration depicting the Virgin Mary, flaming hearts and scrollwork and original working key. With brass studded detailing in the form of a diamond motif above the doors and the date 1863 below. The sides are of panelled construction and the interior is later fitted with a shelf and hanging bar.
Although the armoire is dated 1863 it is very likely of an earlier date with the brass detailing a later addition. Given the decoration to the brass escutcheons it is possibly of ecclesiastical origin.
Measures 193cm high x 123cm wide (138cm including cornice) x 62cm deep
