Victorian Gilt Metal Casket

SOLD

Code: 10496

Dimensions:

H: 13.5cm (5.3")W: 18.5cm (7.3")D: 9cm (3.5")

A good quality Victorian gilt brass stationery casket, circa 1860 by Edwin Bradford of Torquay, the dome top inset with a central reverse-cut glass intaglio depicting a scene from classical mythology, surrounded by acanthus engraved decoration and opening to reveal a leather and paper lined interior.  The casket with applied rope decoration and with an engraved Greek key border.

Engraved 'EDWIN BRADFORD, 9 Strand, Torquay' to the inner rim.

Edwin Bradford was a well known manufacturer and retailer of good quality hard-stone set works of art and jewellery from the 1840's onwards.

Condition: The glass intaglio to the top is probably a replacement as the scene faces sidewards. It is likely to have originally been inset with a hard-stone or malachite.  The gilt is dirty and has some spotting, I have not attempted to clean it in any way.  There is no key.
