An antique Italian Renaissance revival oak Sgabello chair, with shaped back carved with a grotesque mask over a solid seat, the footboard with a central cartouche, swags and foliage and joined to the backboard with a shaped and pierced stretcher.
A sgabello is a type of stool typical of the Italian Renaissance and often associated with Venice. They were usually placed in halls, often featuring the family’s coat of arms alongside elaborately carved mythical beasts and grotesques and as such were not designed for comfort but rather to impress important guests. Often later chairs are copies of original 16th century designs.
Seat height 46cm.
