Victorian Brass Steam Engine Nameplate FIREFLY

SOLD

Code: 11790

Dimensions:

H: 8cm (3.1")W: 53cm (20.9")D: 5cm (2")

A Victorian brass nameplate, probably from a steam traction engine or perhaps a stationery engine. Dated '1st 1864' and '2nd 1893' which may refer to two different incarnations of the same engine.

The wording and numerals are deep cast and have 'crackled' residue of the original black lacquer infill.

The words Fire and Fly are not typically conjoined.

The integral cast mount is unusually sloped so it wasn't fixed to a vertical flat surface. Later mounted on two wooden blocks for display. Some slight warping on the right hand mount and wear and scratching overall commensurate with its industrial life.
