A child's Regency bobbin turned beechwood deportment chair, the bobbin turned back with gadroon borders and fan shaped top crest centred with a heart, over a solid elm seat and raised on bobbin turned out-swept legs joined by stretchers.
A charming chair of good colour, the turned front stretcher is beautifully worn from years of use. The solid seat is a 19th century replacement and would originally have been cane.
Correction or deportment chairs are also known as Astley Cooper Chairs (Sir Astley Paston Cooper 1768-1841). Sir Astley, a surgeon and anatomist, designed these chairs in order to correct faulty posture in children.
